Benno de Hertog and Pauline Alkema manage Boerderij Watervliet: an organic farm (‘boerderij’ in Dutch) with suckler cows, sheep and three ponies, in the south of the ‘Wormer- en Jisperveld’. This is a meadow bird sanctuary northeast of the Zaan region in the Netherlands. Three days a week they offer day activities for a fixed group of care farmers or farmers wives who can help take care of the livestock and work on the land, in the garden or in the greenhouse. Much is being done on nature management in collaboration with the Agrarische Natuurvereniging (Agrarian Nature Association) and Natuurmonumenten (Natural Monuments).
